LOWER UNITS Meet the Water

And that can be a Problem!

A Little Lube or a Lost Season?

Hopefully you check the lubricant in your gearcase aka lower unit aka outdrive at least a couple times a year . While you're at it why not just change the lube every few uses. It only takes a few minutes, but you can make a big deal out of it and stay outside with your boat half of the afternoon with very little sleight of hand.

Seriously though; I would see much less of my customers during the season if they all followed this practice.
I change the gearcase lube in every boat that comes to my shop regardless of what the work-order states. When the boat is picked up, if the customer says he didn't want it changed, I don't charge him that few bucks.....

That's how important I think this preventative maintenance area is.

Water in the lube or lack of lube can cost some major bucks and downtime during a boating season that's too short to start with.

Call your dealer and price a gearcase overhaul; or ask what a good used one cost.

You'll get friendly with a screwdriver real quick!

The procedure is quite simple.

Get a pan to drain the oil into

A large slotted(or regular) screwdriver

The required number of tubes of the proper lubricant

A rag or handful of paper towels

A container to carry the old oil to your local  Recycle or Disposal Center .
