I finally got a chance to put together this newsletter after an exhaustive and troubling six weeks involving a lot of out of state travel. Many of my normal tasks have gone uncompleted or forgotten with so much going on. Besides this newsletter; almost all emails have yet to receive a reply and if yours is one, you might want to resend it in the next few days and I'll try to catch it again.
A dear out-of-state relative's long bout with cancer finally came to a calm, peacefull end last week.
Things are slowly returning to normal now and I want to mention something to those of you who have time and resources to volunteer or help a great organization: Hospice!
It was my first experience with them but I was impressed with their caring and professionalism in making her final weeks more comfortable. I don't have any details but they are certainlly worthy of any support you could offer.

I've got a little news and a few updates this month, but no great Fall tips etc. but I promise the Oct. newsletter in a couple weeks and I'll try to get you up to speed on the season and get some deals on winterizing supplies in place as well.

I know it's early yet, but if you hear of a "Holiday Boat Parade" scheduled for your area; let me know so I can start putting a list together before the fact this year instead of just a review of the winners similar to last year.
Send schedules to:  parades@brokeboats.com

If you have some comments on the manatees send those to:

Welcome to all the new subscribers out there. You are in the good company of an ever growing group of fine boaters and sportsmen/women.
Enjoy the cruise and pass it along, Wayne

One sailor, one boat, one goal. Around the world !
  v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^
Around Alone is the longest race on earth for any individual in any sport. Formerly the BOC Challenge, the Around Alone course spans some 28,755 miles of the world's roughest and most remote oceans. It is a gruelling single-handed sailing race, one of the most difficult and dangerous ever conceived where competitors are both the captain and crew, pitting themselves and their craft against the elements, alone, and where the finish line is literally a world away.

Around Alone 2002-03 will gather in Newport, Rhode Island (USA), and depart for a 160nm, crewed prologue race to New York on 12th September 2002. The start will be given on Sunday 15th September 2002 from New York. The race takes the fleet from New York to Torbay (England), then Cape Town (South Africa), Tauranga (New Zealand) and Salvador de Bahia (Brazil), before returning to Newport in April 2003. The official entry list of competitors consists of 14 competitors from 10 different nationalities; 7 in Class I and 7 in Class.

Introduction by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston
“Around Alone is the greatest mental and physical challenge in any sport. Only those with the highest proven stamina and mental toughness should enter for what is the ultimate classic ocean race - the ultimate sporting challenge."
"All around the world races are tough, some are tougher than others, however there is none more demanding on the individual than Around Alone. In each around the world race, the courses may be similar, the frustrations of the calms, and the fear of the giant waves of the Southern Ocean the same, but there the comparisons stop. When you sail non-stop around the world the boat must be conserved all the way. One small piece of damage early on can mean removing any chance of a win."

It is thrilling to keep abreast on the internet with all the challenges the sailors face each day. You can almost taste the salt, feel the spray, sense the dangers, and hate the calm on the various legs of the race!

         Concept Boat Entries
   v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^

 Concept Boat competition  list unveiled.

The British Marine Federation (BMF) and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), the organizers of the Concept Boat competition that was launched at the Southampton Boat Show in September of last year, unveiled the short-listed candidates for the competition at the 2002 Southampton Boat Show, which finishes on Sunday, on Thursday, 19 September.

Visiting the Concept Boat stand at the show, UK Industry Minister Alan Johnson also launched the 2003 Concept Boat competition, and praised the high standard of entries in the 2002 competition, which has attracted 100 entries from more than 20 countries.

"The UK boating industry has built a solid reputation for quality and design and innovation, and it is important that it retains its high status," noted Johnson, describing the Concept Boat Competition as a "welcome initiative which invested in the future of the sector and encouraged people to drive for ever higher standards, ensuring that the UK remained at the forefront of the global marine sector."

The theme for the 2002 competition was 'Transportable Boats,' a transportable boat being any recreational or commercial craft of up to 24 metres in length to be used on or in water and capable of being easily transported by the user on, in or behind another vehicle, vessel or aircraft.

Entrants were also requested to show that their boats were not only viable boats or watercraft, but that they were also practical and easy to transport.

Short list includes …

Among the short-listed and highly commended entries for this year's competition are the 'Buzzwizz,' a simple, lightweight, low cost two-man 'micro-sized' twin hull fun boat/tender; the Stingray, a fun Laser replacement for the mature (heavier) sailor to be crewed by one or two; and the 'Rando,' from France, a traditional looking, simple and economic coastal and inland 2/4-person sail cruiser with electric propulsion.

Other entries included the 'Kanakai,' from Japan, a fast, safe and comfortable kayak; the 'Euniq,' a lightweight trailer-sailer with an unusual rig that is 'easy to launch and retrieve, simple to rig and fun to sail'; the KW 650, from Ireland, an eco-friendly four-man trailer-sailer, featuring an integrated ballast/electric propulsion keel; and the 'Valti,' from Denmark, which was described as a clever, flat pack two-man outrigger canoe.

From the United States came the 'Missail,' a lightweight, single-handed, collapsible, performance catamaran, whilst from South Africa came an idea for a novel solo sailing dinghy.

Other entries includes a rescue/relief craft from the United Kingdom that can be transported by land, sea or air, equipped with its own desalination unit (water-maker) to provide immediate safe drinking water when anchored a short distance off the shore; a folding, floating catamaran with a rowing mechanism similar to a gymnasium machine; and from New Zealand, the 'Jasmin,' a simple folding multihull sailing yacht with berths for four.

The winner of the 2002 Concept Boat Competition will be announced at the London Boat Show in January next year.

Watercraft-related manatee deaths hit record numbers
    v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^

Preliminary reports from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC's) Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI) indicate 83 manatees deaths due to collisions with watercraft have taken place in the Sunshine State this year, exceeding the last record number of 82 set in 1999 and totaling 33 percent of all manatee deaths in the states, the FWC reported in a press release dated 27 September.

Although the year is not yet over, state regulators have not expressed much concern over the report, said the Bradenton Herald in an article dated 28 September.
http://www.bradenton.com/mld/bradentonherald/news/local/4167948.htm

"I don't tend to put much stock in that number, because we are dealing with a population," David Arnold, chief of Florida's Bureau of Protected Species Management, told the newspaper. "As with any population, you hope you have more of them out there. And if you have more out there, you will pick up a few more dead ones."

Environmental and animal rights groups had a different take on the situation, however.

"It is callous and inhumane to suggest that if there are more manatees, then it is OK for more of them to be injured or killed by watercraft," said Judith Vallee, executive director of Maitland-based Save The Manatee Club, to the newspaper.

The last statewide survey of manatee numbers in Florida in 2001 put the population of sea mammals at over 3,200, according to the FWC.

To protect the manatees, the FWC previously approved 10 new manatee protection zones in earlier this month, which are outlined on the commission's website, http://www.floridaconservation.org/  according to the group.

"That watercraft mortality has been a 'record' every year (or every other year) for decades — it should come as no surprise because the population of manatees is growing so fast," said Jim Kalvin president & CEO of Standing Watch, in a press release dated 27 September.

The Family BoatBuilding event is being expanded to all 50 states and several international countries over one week in the summer of 2003, the group announced in a press release dated Friday, 27 September.

The event, which involves families and groups building their own boats in two days, launching them on the third day and taking them home for their own uses, will be introduced to the general public in each US state or participating country by regional sponsors and producers, organizers said.

"Building a boat as a team creates remarkably strong family bonds," said Carl Cramer, publisher of WoodenBoat magazine. "We want to encourage this integral aspect of recreational boating by providing the Family BoatBuilding opportunity to as many families as we can."

WoodenBoat magazine and the Alexandria Seaport Foundation, Alexandria, Virginia, are co-producing Family Boatbuilding Week 2003, which was first held at the WoodenBoat show in 1998, said organizers.

Organizers of Family BoatBuilding Week will launch a drive to find nationwide support at the Annapolis Boat Show, 10-14 October, in Annapolis, Maryland, according to the group.

 You Can Do It!
The theme behind the event is that ordinary people -- in our case, families -- can, with proper instruction, build their own boat in a matter of days. Our experience has been that no prior woodworking or boatbuilding expertise is required.
The greatest single ingredient needed for this event is that families be dedicated to completing the task. We have been so fortunate that our 112 families have been truly committed to the event. They help other families when one invariably falls behind; they share tools and interpretation; and they follow the instruction of the event organizers.

To track each manatee a special transmitter placed in a waterproof container is attached by a four-foot tether to the manatee's tail. The towed transmitter broadcasts to a receiver placed on low-flying (525 miles altitude), polar orbiting Tiros-N satellites.
The satellite, in turn, relays the manatee data to Earth-based listening stations where ARGOS computers determine the location of the manatee. Finally, the locations are sent to the project scientists via the Internet. The locations of the manatees are accurate to about 0.6 mile.

Six mating manatees beached in Florida
from the Associated Press

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Beachgoers were treated to a heavyweight spectacle Tuesday: a female manatee that beached herself to avoid the advances of five males, which followed her onto the sand.

"A lot of people are running for their cameras," city biologist Kirt Rusenko said of the 100 or so onlookers gathered behind orange barricades protecting the creatures.

Penny Husted, a state manatee biologist, said that during mating season, as many as 20 males will follow a female manatee for days, sometimes weeks!

Six manatees beached themselves in Florida, however, wildlife officials assured the would-be rescuers that they were not stranded - they were just escaping the amorous attention of male manatees. The six girls beached themselves behind a row of hotels, where several dozen spectators crowded around fearing that the manatees were lost or ailing. An officer with the state Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission said that the behavior of the females is typical of exhausted females pursued by a "mating herd" of 2 to 20 males during the summer mating season. The manatees will likely swim away when they have recovered, however, a wildlife officer watched over them to keep "rescuers" away. Said of the manatees "These poor girls, the only way they can escape the attention of the males, who are very persistent, is to ground themselves or go up on the beach. The biologists believe that after a point, enough's enough. They're tired."

Hey, I think I've heard that line myself before!

HURRICANE AND STORM SEASON IS HERE !
    v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^

I told you in July about the hurricane season and steps to take in the event of one. Our friends in Louisana found out the hard way last week and we all know the Red Cross is there to lend a hand.

I know from experience that after the news coverage and headlines diminish those folks are just starting to need help. There are many other ways to lend a hand and often the small things are appreciated more. Get together with your church or boating club or buddies and send a care package to a church in one of the towns that Lili blasted through. I'm sure they could use anything from canned food to paper towels to rolls of polyethelyne or tarps. It's the little things you use every day that they are most likely without now, so do what you can. Don't forget the kids either!

All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of Tropical Storm Isidore, Hurricane Lili and thousands of other disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. Call 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make secure online credit card donations by visiting http://www.redcross.org/
