REMOVAL AND DISASSEMBLY --SMALL OMC LOWER UNITS--Early split cases

Placing the motor in a tilted up position will make this job easier on the knees.

Now remove cotter key, prop nut, prop, and shear pin. Right above the flat cavitation plate over the prop and foward

remove the 4 or 6 bolts that hold lower unit to exhaust housing, (2 or 3 on either side depending on model).

Before you can completely remove unit, the shift shaft will have to be dis-connected.REMOVE that bolt completely.

After removal you'll have to first remove the pivot pin then remove the 6 screws that hold the split shaft/gear area together.

Seperate the halfs and you will be able to see the damaged components. The clutch dog and gears have to mate witout any rounded edges where they engage. You can carefully remove shaft, gears, and clutch dog as one piece and see how they operate. The shift cradle in the diagram should have no worn areas as well.

Once you determine the necessary replacement parts you require you can start looking for those you need. If some are no longer available then ask around about good used parts or many older dealers still have what you need as New Old Stock (NOS).

If you have trouble finding parts there are a couple places to check on-line for the used parts or used lower unit complete at My links page
