I can not locate the manual release on the 86 Evinrude motor for the tilt & trim, there is no screw where the manual shows it.

Thanks.......Frank

Hi,
You forgot to mention the size or model number of your motor but if it is a 60 HP Evinrude or larger this may help:

You have to put your screwdriver through a hole on the starrboard transom bracket.

The release screw is about three inches up in there, look with a flashlight and you'll see it.

Tip: Use a large slotted screwdriver so you don't mess up the screw as some are plastic.

If your motor is under 60 HP, let me know.
Hope this helps, Wayne

Another frequent question:

I have a 115hp Evinrude with a Johnson powertilt pump lifting it,I've just had the powertilt rewound and refitted but in 2 outings have burnt out 2 toggle switches, now the 3rd is getting red hot also.

It sounds like someone wired your trim directly through the switch and a toggle switch can't handle the amps to run the trim motor. I think your motor originally had a "trim box" mounted in the rear of the boat. No big deal if it is gone though! If you get 2 12 volt solenoids and some wire etc. and wire it as in this little drawing:

trimWires.gif

The above is a "bare bones" basic wiring diagram for most I/Os and older model outboards using solenoids....you will have to check a detailed wiring diagram for trim limit and trim sender wire connections etc.
By using this method the solenoids are transferring the amps and not the toggle switch. Note that the wire size going to trim motor are larger than the small wires coming from switch. The colors may not be the same as yours but you'll get the idea.
