Wayne,

I have a '98 Searay w/ 5.7 (Carb) and Alpha I Drive.
For the past few weeks, I have expirenced a very rough idle and stalling of the engine at idle speed.
The engine went from working perfectly to this situation over night.
I would think that the carb just needs adjustment - can you tell me the adjustment procedure and any other thoughts you may have on this?
Thanks
.

Here's the answer

If your problem started all at once a good first place to start would be contaminated fuel.
On many occasions my customers got water mixed with gas, sometimes as much as 2 gallons while filling up a six gallon boat can.
Never buy gas at a service station when the tanker truck is filling up their tanks or shortly thereafter!
They count on water present in the storage tanks to remain on the bottom below the outlet going to customer pumps.
Since gas is lighter than water this works quite well.
But after dumping five or ten thousand gallons of new gas in, it does a bit of mixing, in a short while the gas and water separate again and all is okay .

If your boat is not already equipped with a fuel-water separator between tank and engine then it would be a well spent 20 bucks.
A fuel-water separator is quick and easy to install and you can get one right here: Complete fuel-water separator-filter kit, click here.

While most automobiles would continue operating without a lot of noticeable problems, most boats can't.
